Underwater treasure
Andrea Graves from the NZ Listener visited our Tauranga-based hatchery run by the University of Waikato to find out more about the hatchery process and how we’re turning a scientific lens on the whole process. The article, published in New Zealand listener 17 Jun 2023, reports on the growing trend of seaweed aquaculture to cleanse wastewater as it absorbs large quantities of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Highlights the work of Aqua Curo, a company that launders wastewater through ponds of native freshwater algae but is suffering from temporary supply insecurity. Explains how desirable seaweed species Ecklonia radiata is being grown on mussel ropes in a polyculture-style pilot by Green Wave Aotearoa which follows experiments conducted overseas. Notes the current regulatory system has needed to be updated to include seaweed. It also touches on using native red seaweed Asparagopsis to reduce the amount of methane belched by cattle and sheep.
